Abrasive Blasting - East Lake

Abrasive Blasting

Our team determines the best way to pre-treat your project to obtain the finish you desire. In some cases, abrasive blasting is required to properly clean your project and prepare it for the powder application process. In other cases, a chemical wash can be used to remove impurities and prepare your project for finishing. Doing so ensures the powder will properly adhere to your project and therefore cure properly to increase the durability and life of your finish.

Do you have a stand-alone project that you’d like to have abrasive blasted? Using our state of the art abrasive blasting booth which includes a media reclaiming system, we can accommodate projects no larger than 15 feet wide by 15 feet long and 10 feet high.

Powder Coat Your Wheels

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Powder Coating better than paint?

For the right project – YES! Powder Coating is applied using an electrostatic process which attracts the powder to the surfaces of the part providing excellent coverage. The powder is then baked on in a 400–450-degree Fahrenheit oven to provide a very durable coating that is ready for use as soon as it cools. One of the key advantages to Powder Coat over other finishing processes is that powder coating does not generate harmful solvents or airborne pollutants, making it an environmentally friendly option. It is an excellent alternative for items that are exposed to our Alberta Weather. We also powder coat indoor items, such as railings and metal furniture frames. Come check out our handrail in the Welding Shop Office to see how awesome it is!

Can you colour match Powder Coat?

Yes usually we can! We attempt to stock colors from Spectrum Powder at no additional cost to our customers. To see their colour chart click here. In some cases, a custom color is required to get a more exact color match for your project. Check out the links to Beyond Powder, Prismatic Powder and Tiger Drylac to see the variety of options that are available. There is an additional fee for custom colors, but the end result is worth it!

Do I have to remove the tires from my rims before I bring them in to be Powder Coated?

YES, you do! Powder is applied to your rims using an electrostatic process that adheres the powder to the rim. It then is baked in an oven at 450 degrees to cure the powder and allow it to flow around your rims creating a fused uniform coating. For this reason, all tires, centre caps and sensors must be removed from your rims so they do not get damaged (i.e. MELT!) during the curing process. Unfortunately, East Lake does NOT provide this service, but any of the tire stores in town can help you out.

I have some minor damage, for example, road rash on my rims, can you fix damaged rims?

We will certainly take a look and see what we can do, please send pictures to help us evaluate the extent of the damage. There will be an additional charge for any repairs required, but generally minor road rash can be eliminated with abrasive blasting.

Can chrome rims be Powder Coated?

If the chrome is in like new condition, we will be able to prep the rims using abrasive blasting to prepare for powder coat. If the chrome is old, rusty, or chipping off, it will need to be stripped before your rims can be powder coated. East Lake does not provide chrome stripping services.

Can East Lake Powder Coat bumpers?

Yes, we can, however, the bumper can not be previously covered with box liner spray.

How big of a project can you Powder Coat?

Our Powder Coat oven is 10 feet wide by 16 feet deep and 8 feet high. As long as we can fit it in our oven, and move around your part to paint it, we can coat it!

Which metals can be Powder Coated?

Aluminium, Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel, and Cast Iron can be effectively powder coated. If the metal doesn’t melt at 450 degrees it is a good candidate for Powder Coating!

How long will it take to get my project done?

This is a tricky question to answer as there are many factors that influence how long it will take to complete a project. As a general rule of thumb, we try our best to get your project through our shop within 3-5 business days, however we will discuss this with you at the time you drop off your project and we have a better idea of what’s ahead in our schedule.
